What Facebook’s New Search Means for Your Business

At the end of 2014, Facebook made live its new search. Here's what businesses need to know to make it work for them.

Last week, Facebook made live its new search, which now allows users to use keyword search to find not only pages or people, but also any posts (including past ones) by people you know or pages you’ve liked.

In other words, if I do a search for “blogging,” as I did on my own Facebook in the photo to the right, I can sort my results to search only for pages (as in the photo) or people, or I can sort them to search for posts, which would allow me to see Facebook posts from people or businesses related to blogging.

Blogging now more valuable

So, why does this matter?

For a business, Facebook’s new search means another way to maximize exposure for its website, and increases the importance of content marketing for Facebook.

So, blog!

And repost those blog entries to Facebook. Because these posts have the potential to show up in users’ search results, businesses have an interest in using the same SEO strategies on Facebook as on their websites and blogs in order to maximize reach.

Currently, the Facebook search feature only provides search results from pages you’ve liked (or people you’re friends with), so it won’t show posts from entities users haven’t indicated an interest in. But Facebook says public search will likely happen in the future, which would mean an even broader reach for businesses’ Facebook posts.
